What is the Local Adaptation Plan (LAP)?
The LAP is Zanzibar’s roadmap for community-led climate resilience. It empowers local voices and traditional knowledge to guide our response to climate threats, with a strong focus on:
- Environmental protection
- Water security
- Coastal and marine ecosystem preservation
- Climate-smart agriculture
- Resilient infrastructure and livelihoods
Why Zanzibar? Why Now?
Zanzibar’s beauty is our strength—but also our vulnerability. Climate change threatens:
- Our coral reefs and marine life
- The livelihoods of farmers and fishers
- Freshwater supplies and food security
- Historic Stone Town and other coastal settlements
Now is the time to adapt locally to protect globally.
Our Environmental Protection Strategy
- We are taking bold steps to protect the natural environment:
- Reforesting mangroves and restoring coastal buffers
- Promoting eco-friendly tourism and waste management
- Enhancing biodiversity through marine protected areas
- Supporting community-led conservation projects
Every action we take reduces our climate risks and preserves Zanzibar’s natural heritage.
Community First. Always.
Our plan is not top-down. It's bottom-up—crafted by the people, for the people. From Pemba to Unguja, we are:
- Conducting local climate risk assessments
- Training youth and women in green jobs
- Strengthening traditional knowledge systems
- Providing tools and funding for grassroots adaptation
